Abstract
Intrusion detection in the field of computer network is an important area of research from the past few years. Many approaches of classification have been proposed and their merits and demerits have been compared with the existing approaches. Machine learning approaches are used with the detection systems to accurately detect the attacks in real time. In the present approach a hybrid algorithm is proposed which is a combination of Support Vector Machine and Classification and Regression tree algorithm for classifying the attacks. The proposed technique is then applied on the KDDCUP 99 dataset. The proposed algorithm shows better results in terms of accuracy detection rate and false rate. In future other machine learning algorithms must be used and their results must be compared with the existing approaches.
