Abstract
Communities in remote areas do not have access to certified seeds of the crop varieties they wish to grow since the formal sector does not conduct varietal demonstrations in these locations. Thus, seed dealers do not have enough information to advice farmers on the attributes and advantages of varieties they are selling. An alternative to fill the smallholder quality seed gaps is to strengthen the capacities of selected farmers or farmer organizations that will produce and manage the distribution of quality seeds of both improved and good local varieties. Therefore, the role of small scale seed producing cooperatives is very crucial. It covers cooperative membership, the use of cooperative services, their role in providing in seed multiplication and production and cooperatives in agricultural marketing. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review the role of small scale Seed Producing Cooperatives for commercial seed production.
