Abstract
In the present study, we have reported the green and chemical synthesis and characterization of bismuth oxide nanoparticles using Anisomeles malabarica leaf extract as a natural surfactant. Degradation of Congo Red (CR) dye in aqueous solutions was investigated by means of photo catalysis of bismuth oxide which was synthesized by green and chemical methods. Efficiency of bismuth oxide for photo catalytic degradation under visible irradiation was studied by investigating the effects of amount of bismuth oxide , irradiation time, initial concentration and pH. It was found that complete decolorization is achieved within 30 min of irradiation. Results proved that bismuth oxide(green method) nanoparticles show more enhanced photo catalytic activity when compared to bismuth oxide(chemical method) nanoparticles. The prepared bismuth oxide nanoparticles have been characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Keywords- Anisomeles malabarica, bismuth oxide, congo red dye, dye degradation, isotherm.
