Abstract

The unprecedented population increase and industrial development during the 20th century has not only increased conventional solid and liquid waste pollutants to critical levels but also produced a range of previously unknown pollution problems for which society was unprepared. The growth of the world population, the development of various industries, and the use of fertilizers and pesticides in modern agriculture has overloaded not only the water resources but also the atmosphere and the soil with pollutants .
