Feasibility Study on the conversion of Aluminium Flat Rectangular Plate to Glass Composite
Authors

Abstract
A case study on the design and optimisation has been done to assess the feasibility of converting Aluminium to Composite in order to achieve weight reduction meeting the performance requirement with due consideration to cost and ease of manufacturability. The performance of existing Aluminium plate when subjected to a uniform pressure load and cantilever boundary condition was set as the benchmark for the design study. To achieve best performance with minimum cost, a fibre – matrix combination of Glass and Polyester resin was defined for the study. This case study was divided into 2 phases. The objective of the first phase was to evaluate the feasibility of matching stiffness of Aluminium plate by a Glass plate and draw a comparison of the weights. The objective of the second phase was to optimise the thickness distribution across the Aluminium and Glass plates. Based on the relative ease of manufacturing, a comparison is drawn between the Aluminium and Glass plates and an optimum solution is presented.
