Exploring the use of AI to predict Air Quality Index from Photos of A Polluted Sky

Abstract
There has been a lot of discussion about air pollution in India. In 2019 alone, around 1.7 million people were killed in India as
a result of air pollution Most of these deaths happen within poor urban and rural communities. Members of these communities
perform more outdoor labour, are unable to afford devices such as air purifiers, and are often, unaware of the AQI value
around them. The vast majority of Indian districts have no air monitoring stations. Without the adequate amount of monitors,
citizens wouldn’t be able to identify the air quality value in their communities. This research paper proposes the construction
of an AI platform called AVA that allows users to simply take a photo of the sky. My AI model then predicts the AQI in the
photo, and provides public health guidance. I deployed the platform in villages and small cities across India, to very promising
results.
